A NAIM alapítója, Julian Vereker MBE (1945-2000) volt versenyautó-vezető, vállalkozó és autodidakta mérnök akit mély szenvedély fűzött a zenéhez. Szabadidejét az 1960-as években barátai koncetrjeinek hallgatásával és azok rögzítésével töltötte. Julian úgy találta, hogy a felvételek messze nem olyan élményt nyújtottak az otthoni rendszerén, mint a koncertek alatt.
A második legjobbal nem volt elégedett, így úgy döntött, hogy megtervezi saját erősítőit és hangsugárzóit, figyelmen kívül hagyva az addig elfogadott tapasztalatokat és tudást, és olyan előadásmódra koncentrált, amely a zenét életre keltette. Ezek az első tervezések megteremtették számos ikonikus és díjnyertes hi-fi termék alapját, melyek a következő évszázadra is átnyúltak.
